How do breakfast programs fail the kids?
One problem with the free breakfast programs at schools is the way it is served. It is embarrassing for some students to have to have to get this free breakfast. For some students the breakfast is served to early. Because of transportation problems, some students can’t make it to breakfast on time. Breakfast is important and every kids needs breakfast for a successful day of learning.
Students are embarrassed to be picked out as the “poor kid” because they are receiving free breakfast. As a result of being embarrassed, many kids skip out on the free breakfast provided. They skip it no matter how bad they need the food. They need it because they don’t receive breakfast at home. They also need it to be more successful in school.
For some students the free breakfast is served too early. Many students can’t get to school in time to get the breakfast . Home issues prevent them from being at school that early. These issues at home are usually out of these kids control. It’s not their fault that they don’t have food at home and don’t have a way to get to school on time for the free breakfast.
Some schools have solved some of these problems. Many school serve breakfast in the classroom at the beginning of the day. This makes breakfast a regular part of the school day. Educators with breakfast in the classroom have seen improvement in the children's class work. Students are energized and ready to learn.
