Child Hunger in America's Public Schools
Over half the public school students in the United States come from low-income families. In 2016, the United States recorded the highest amount of students from low income families ever. With these families struggling with poverty and hunger, it is hard for them to get a meal everyday. That means the children coming from these families often come to school hungry. This isn't setting them up for a successful day at school.
Children coming from these families can't concentrate, learn, and process things like kids coming from families with food. These kids that can't concentrate, learn, and process things often have a hard time succeeding in school. Without food to eat at home they are being set up for failure. They are more likely thinking about their next meal, than what is being taught in the classroom.
Hunger hurts children's futures. They think about now and getting through the day. They don't have what they need to be able to think past just one day. They don't think about the future. The hunger in them is crushing their hopes and dreams into just finding something to eat.
With so many low-income families and hungry kids in America's public schools, it is hurting us as a country. It isn't hurting us now as much as it will hurt our countries future. The amount of these low-income families isn't decreasing. So we need to do something about it. America can't be a strong country if we don't have strong, educated children.
