Statistics on Hungry Kids in America
One out of five kids, or 16 million kids, in America live in households where they don't have access to the food they need. Most of those kids only get food at school. They don't eat a good breakfast to get their day started. For most of those kids, lunch at school is the only meal they receive, because they aren't fed when they go home either. Twenty-two percent of kids are under the age of 18 and living in households like that.
During the school year, 21 million kids rely on reduced-price lunches at school. These are kids that may not live in poverty, but they wouldn't be able to afford lunch at school if the price wasn't reduced. These reduced-price lunches enable parent to afford lunches at school for their children. Eleven million kids also receive reduced-price or free breakfast at school. This allows kids to have a healthy breakfast to get their day started.
Three million kids are eligible to receive free meals in the summer when school is out of session. During the summer they aren't able to receive those reduced-price or free meals at school, but they can get them at home. It is not only important for kids to eat during the school day or year, but during the summer as well. These three million kids still need food outside of school. If they weren't receiving this food during the summer, most of those kids would go hungry.
With all of the reduced-price and free meals, kids are able to do better in school. There was a 17.5 percent increase in standardized test math scores after programs with reduced-price and free meals began. Student have what they need in order to succeed in school. It is a great way to help out children that don't have food at home. These are programs that we need to keep going in order to be a strong America.
